OUR Society can proudly claim to be one of Britain's oldest active One-Name Studies. We formed to research the Hamley's in Feb., 1968. Later, in 1970, the Society was formally set-up under it's present three-surname Title. We were among the first 'A' Category members Registered in the Guild of One-Name Studies in 1979 ( No. 64 ) and set-up project study methods now widely adopted.

OUR AIMS: SUMMARISED FROM CONSTITUTION - SIMPLE - TRIED AND PROVEN

"..... To research-study and preserve for posterity, in printed or any other recorded form, all the relevant aspects of our Families' history and currently recognised surname variants, within the One-Name Family Group known as the 'Hamley, Hambly, Hamlyn Family History Society' We aim to cover all known variants occurring in our Group, virtually WORLD-WIDE and wherever the English language is understood ......"

WHAT OTHERS SAY :

C G GILBERT in his noted HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE COUNTY OF CORNWALL

" ..... Hamley of Halwyn, now of St. Columb and Bodmin. This family, whose surname has been written Hamelye, Hamlyn and Hamblyn, is undoubtedly of great antiquity in the County of Cornwall where it appears to have been seated before the Norman Conquest...."

Wm. KEENAN (In Britain's Great Shopkeepers Series)in LONDON EVENING NEWS,12th Nov.,1957

" ..... Before the Normans conquered us, the Hamleys were an old family in Cornwall. The name was sometimes spelt Halwyn and that is the way it is mentioned in the Domesday Book. So old is the Hamley line, that some Cornish authorities consider the name is of Phoenican origin"

'HHH LANDMARKS'

Here at random are a few of our 'personalities'. Some may be found in YOUR ancestry, probably if they hailed from CORNWALL or DEVON where 'Elder Lines' have established roots for seven centuries. One noted Historian recorded " This land has never been without 'John' Hamley (or it's variants) continuously for over six centuries "

BUT there are other 'Fascinating Finds' as we dig into our Studies in an A to Z miscellany of 'Non-headline' people. What about hundreds of those "Ag Labs?" What too, of many Artisans & Artists; Bakers & Builders, Coroners & Carpenters, Doctors & Dustmen, Farmers & Fisher-folk, along with Justices & Judges, Learned & Literary folk, Masons, Miners & Masters; the great Mothers & Missionaries; Parsons & Poets, Quakers & Royalists, School-owners, Shepherds, Shopkeepers, Seaman & Soldiers; Tinners & Tinkers match Watchmen & Watchmakers - even Yeomen & Yacht-makers?

Their Family trees and archives have a rightful place in our Nation's History, created by folk who left their marks - with their skills - in a fascinating kaleidoscope of our West Country Family Heritage. We never forget our "strays" to other Counties, and countless migrant descendants now span the World, nurturing roots planted everywhere in the Pioneering traditions of forebears.

We invite YOU to become a Member to receive and enjoy our HHH GAZETTE, Membership and Interests Lists, etc. and links with many similar interests. 'Beginners' as warmly welcomed as "Research Enthusiasts" - even Devotees of Patent Rolls, Poll Books and Muster Rolls, or the quaintly-sounding Feats of Fines! Just use your enrolment form to tell us Family Study preferences; or seek expertise and advice about practical sources of help; how GRO's work, locations of various County Records, specialised Libraries, etc. - and much more.

How Much? Surprisingly little. Our membership subscriptions (or USA Dues) are really quite modest. They are still GB Pounds 7-00 per year for Overseas Members; GB Pounds 6-00 per year for UK. There is no "Entrance Fee"- as some societies impose for new members. No 'Family membership' grades as anyone in the same Household can subscribe in their own right. Younger family members are very welcome.

Our little society is always busy. - We serve in a quiet, friendly caring style, on an entirely voluntary, non-profit making basis. Without paid Officers we depend considerably on goodwill and members' self-help. [Grateful members sometimes add small donations for our collective ongoing Projects, (e.g. extracting Census details) or to help build our Archives and Family trees collection and add to our unique small H-Family-material Library.]
